CHAPTER 20
FAQ & Contact
Frequently asked questions
Q. I cleared my data by mistake. Can I recover it?
A backup is automatically created just before clearing data or loading a file. Try “Restore from backup” on the Settings screen (see Settings).
Q. I’m changing devices. How do I carry over my data?
Save your data as a zip file with “Save data” on the Settings screen, then use “Load data” on the new device. Saving to Google Drive makes the transfer easy. That option is coming in the next release (see Transfer via Google Drive).
Q. I want to prepare the survey on a computer and record on my phone.
Build the layers (your survey form) in the web version and export them with “Save data”. Then load that zip on the phone with “Load data”. You can also hand over only the survey form and leave the data already on the phone untouched. See Survey Workflow for the overall flow.
Q. The map isn’t showing.
First check your internet connection. If you are in offline mode, only downloaded maps are shown. If you changed the map’s URL, try “Clear cache” on the Settings screen. Maps served with restricted access are only shown when you are signed in with an organization account.
Q. What kinds of maps can I use?
You can use XYZ-format map tiles, vector tiles (pbf), PMTiles, and geospatial PDFs. When using external maps such as GSI maps, check the provider’s terms of use (see Set Up Maps).
Q. After re-importing an exported GeoJSON, fields such as radio buttons all became “String”.
Importing a GeoJSON on its own does not carry over the layer definition. Unzip the exported ZIP and edit the GeoJSON, then zip it together with the layer definition (.json) again and import that ZIP (see “Editing in QGIS and bringing data back” in Export Data).
Q. When I try to add a point, “There are no editable layers.” is displayed.
The layer you want to add to is not in edit mode. Turn on the “Edit” check for the target layer in the Layer list (see Create Survey Forms).
Q. Track recording stops midway.
Check that the location permission is set to “Allow all the time”. On Android, also check that battery optimization is disabled (see “When recording does not work well” in Record Tracks with GPS).
Q. My current location is off, or the marker stays gray.
A gray marker is a provisional display while acquiring satellites. Wait a while in a place with open sky (see Record Tracks with GPS).
Q. What happens if I close the app while recording a track?
On Android, recording resumes at the next launch. On iOS, recording stops if the app is completely terminated (background recording is possible on both OSes).
